the Test series against Australia starting October 9. He will be replaced by Tamil Nadu batsman S Badrinath.
“Tendulkar is not playing the Irani Trophy because he has been advised a week of rehabilitation,” Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s chief administrative officer, told Cricinfo. “Paul Close [the National Cricket Academy's physio] has suggested he [Tendulkar] needs a break from the Irani Trophy to recover from the stiff elbow.”
Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, said that Tendulkar will be available for the Test series against Australia which begins on October 9.
Tendulkar will work with Close in Mumbai from September 20 to get fit in time in order to join the national camp in Bangalore. He had twisted his elbow while fielding during the third Test in Sri Lanka last month and was forced out of the one-dayers that followed.
The Irani Trophy match will take place between Ranji Trophy champions Delhi and a Rest of India side that will feature probables for the Test series. Tendulkar had earlier declared himself fit for the match, which starts on Wednesday in Baroda.

Keen to get out of the Plate Group, Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) wants Sourav Ganguly to play for Bengal in the upcoming Ranji Trophy Championship and lift the team from the pits.CAB will have a word with Ganguly as uncertainty prevails on his availability till the announcement of the Indian Test team for the home series against Australia.Left out of the Rest of India squad for the Irani Trophy, meant to feature probables for the Australia series, Ganguly's chances of making it to the Test squad hence stand remote. With retirement theory being widely speculated by many, it remains to be seen whether the sidelined Ganguly, known for making comebacks, performs his way back into the side by representing Bengal in the Plate Division."The president (Jagmohan Dalmiya) will speak to Ganguly in a few days. He is available for Bengal, there's no confusion over that. But he has to wait for the Test team announcement for the Australia series, though he has anoutside chance. But we'll speak to him soon, confirming his availability," CAB joint-secretary Arun Mitra said.Dalmiya meanwhile asserted that Ganguly will not shun Bengal as far as playing in the Ranji Trophy is concerned."Where is the question of him (Ganguly) not playing for Bengal arising? He is a Bengal player, so automatically he will play for Bengal. There's no confusion in this regard," Dalmiya said.Incidentally, Ganguly is not turning up for his daily morning routine at Eden Gardnes these days.Even as he, in an interview to a British daily, said he was not mulling retirement and has couple of years left in him, it's widely seen by many that it's the end of the cricketing career for the former India captain.
